BOLAND CELLAR RECEIVE
PRESTIGIOUS

INTERNATIONAL

 AWARD

Boland Cellars’ commitment to exceptional quality was recognised at the London International Wine Fair when they won the Supply Chain Partner of the Year Award from JF Hillebrand, leading global beverage logistics provider.

Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Boland Cellars produce close to 2,6-million litres of wine per annum, with approximately 57% exported to key international markets. They joined JF Hillebrand’s innovative Supply Chain Management (SCM) programme in 2007, and by the following year had shipped in excess of 120 000 cases through the programme.

Jean du Toit, managing director of Boland Cellars emphasises how imperative it is to maintain current customers and explore new markets.

“To achieve this, we need to grow in both volume and perceived value proposition, by exploring innovative alternatives. The SCM programme helped to optimise our internal operations, providing better planning and management of the production and bottling of stock.”

Rob Turvey, Managing Director of JF Hillebrand SCM, congratulated Boland: “Over the last year, they have consistently delivered against all customer demand in full and on time.” For more information, visit www.bolandwines.co.za

WHAT’S IN A NAME
A fresh new look for Boland, but behind the label, of course, some things never change...

With years invested in perfecting our wines, it’s now time to let the Boland Cellar packaging reflect this. The Five Climates wines offer a speciality for every discerning wine lover.

The French derived concept of ‘terroir’ denotes the marriage between soil, grape and climate of particular territories. But in the New World almost everyone can theoretically claim superior terroir since there is no regulation over this. We, therefore, focus on the merits of what we call ‘regionality’.

Our story of the perfect combination of grapes, sunlight and soil is told through the new Boland Cellar Five Climates Single Varietal range.
The core of our grape supply is found just to the north of Stellenbosch, bordered by Wellington, the Drakenstein and Franschoek ranges, the coastal winegrowing districts of Durbanville and Philadelphia, and Swartland. For more than six decades we have been working in the Paarl region, allowing our viticulturists to isolate five different climatic zones with unique soils and aspects. We achieve product differentiation on the basis of the added complexity gained by masterful blending of wines from the different zones.

Boland Cellar received one of 35 gold medals at Syrah du Monde 2009

This international competition highlights the top Syrah/Shiraz cultivars worldwide. 397 wine samples from 27 countries were tasted, with the judges adhering to the OENO 2/94 International Rules.

Boland Cellar received a Gold medal for their No. 1 Shiraz 2006. This rich, complex cultivar is especially suited to the Mediterranean climate of the Paarl area. Grapes are selected each year from the better of two single vineyards at the foothills of the Paardeberg, a massive sprawling granite hill. Planted in the 1990s, the well-drained shale and duplex soils provide good aeration so the roots can penetrate deep for optimal nutrition.

Both vineyards are trellised and receive supplementary irrigation. Canopy management techniques are intensive, and wind allows for natural crop reduction during early flowering. Green harvesting ensures even ripening; picking is done by hand. Production averages 7–8 tons/ha.

The Top Ten ranking has a strong international diversity, with the first two places occupied by South African Syrah/Shiraz. France and Australia follow, with Italy joining the top ranks for the first time. Chile, USA and Canada continue to reaffirm their good standing.

Boland Cellar’s 2009 harvest began on a very important date historically, 2 February 2009, exactly 350 years after Jan van Riebeek harvested his first grapes at the Cape of Good Hope. A high tempo kept pace for the full duration of the 21 853 tonne harvest, with numerous records set.

  • Most loads received on one day at Northern Paarl Cellar: 135 loads (128 loads in 2004 and 2007)

  • Least loads ever: one load on the last day at Northern Paarl.

  • Highest grape tonnage on one day at Northern Paarl: 816 tons (previous record 730 tons – 2008). This record was broken a week later with 875 tons of grapes on one day.

  • Highest total daily intake of grapes: 1 202 tons of grapes spread over two cellars (previous record 1,131 ton – 2008). The previous record was broken four times over two weeks during the 2009 harvest.

  • Shortest harvest period yet: 30 days (previous record: 35 days in 2002 with a crop size of 13 200 tons).

  • Daljosafat Cellar received the most grapes in one year: 7 914 tons as opposed to 7 506 tons in 2008.

  • Daljosafat also received the most tons in one day: 460 tons as opposed to 394 tons in 2008.

High grape intake and flow of the 2009 harvest

The red wine crop was much smaller than usual and ripened more rapidly, so red and white grape varieties ripened close to or at the same time. Another factor was the increased use of machine harvesting.

At the cellar everything ran smoothly and great teamwork from producers made the job of the winemakers easier. The winemakers are at the top of their game, and are therefore able to take the grapes in over such a short period of time without dropping the ball.

Wine Quality

The cool climatic run-up to the 2009 harvest played a big role. White wines show wonderful fruity flavours, good length and great balance, while the red wines show good fruit, length, intense colour and great structure.

All wines have been tasted and graded, and there is a greater portion of high quality wines, compared with other vintages. With huge enthusiasm in the cellar, 2009 will most likely be known for its outstanding quality wines for a long while to come.
